Computers in Homes Wairoa

Welcome to the Computers in Homes (CIH) Wairoa Website.

Computers In Homes - Rorohiko I roto nga Kainga is a programme that brings computer technology within reach of all New Zealand families with school-aged children.

The programme has provided families in low-income Communities with computers and the internet, but more importantly, training, skills and support through their local school.

With the skills and confidence to use technology, parents are able to connect with their children's learning. As a result, Computers in Homes helps to strengthen relationships between families and schools, improve educational outcomes for children, and provide greater opportunities for their parents.

Computers in Homes has already helped to connect more than 4,000 families, with around 100,000 more waiting.

SO WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WAIROA?

Wairoa District School Families: 2009

Computers in Homes has supported 250 families by providing them with a computer in the home and technology support. We are proud to be apart of your future.

Senior (Pakeke) 55+ Programme: 2010
In March 2010, Computers in Homes Wairoa launched their Senior (Pakeke) Computer programme. Again, Wairoa is fortunate to provide 130 Senior Citizens the opportunity to undertake computer training and upon completion will receive a computer and accessories together with six months free internet connection.

As evidenced from the previous project around the Wairoa District Schools, it was found that many grandparents were primary caregivers to their grandchildren together with a high number of being secondary caregivers as well. Based on these facts, there is a drive to close the technology gap for our Senior Members of Wairoa. We are dedicated to providing a quality service in a safe and comfortable Community Training Centre where families will learn how to operate a computer and have fun learning. There are opportunities for our elderly to close the divide with families living overseas by teaching them how to use their computers to connect with their families living Nationally or internationally. Help is only but a click away.... so call into our Community Training Centre based at Tiaho School to register your interest. We look forward to seeing you there...

Final Group for Training in December

The final group for Computers in Homes training for Wairoa for 2010 - we can't believe how fast this year has gone by.  Congratulations to all the whanau who successfully completed their computer training, we are truly sad and proud (all at the same time) of everyone who stepped up to the challenge of "learning about computers".

Boycie Blake - First experience with using a computer

The thought of using a computer for some families was unheard of.  "Never in a million years" was a phrase I had heard one too many times.  Technology is for everyone, it is for our young children, young adults, parents and grandparents too.  We have to learn to embrace technology - we remember what it was like learning to drive a car, with continuing practice we became confident drivers and got our licence so just like a car, you too will become a confident computer user.  Ka Pai koutou.

Graduations***Graduations***Graduations

Congratulations to all our families who have graduated.  Success!  Success!  Success!

I am so proud of everyone for taking on this new technology challenge, for challenging yourselves and for dedicating the time and effort to be apart of Computers in Homes.

We are proud of the 69 families that have graduated to date.  That is a great accomplishment because it means that 69 families now have the opportunity to have a computer in their home and have access to the internet.  The ability to connect family and friends that live afar on a daily basis through the use of SKYPE, to be able to email and receive photographs of your growing mokopuna and to those families that have registered in the Game Chatrooms, it is great to know that your friendship has continued on, even in the chatrooms.  I especially liked hearing about how some families chat in Te Reo Maori in the Games Room to strategise their next move so no one else knows what they are talking about.  The Internet is endless with knowledge and we congratulate you all for taking on this technology challenge and for sharing your wonderful computer stories with us.

Let's take a look at whats happening at the Community Training Centre (CTC)

Ka Pai to everyone who chooses to follow the yellow brick road to Clyde Road, Wairoa...  Because only good things having been coming out of the Computers in Homes - Community Training Centre.

Let's take a look at some of the families that make it possible for Computers in Homes to succeed in Wairoa.  We receive a lot of appreciation from families, thank you to everyone who has supported us and continues to support us - together we can do great things in Wairoa.  Kia Ora Tatou Katoa.

Computer Training During August 2010

Congratulations to everyone who completed their computer training during August.  A warm welcome to Rapai Te Hau, our new Computer Trainer for Computers in Homes.  It is amazing to see the friendships created amongst everyone, we all have email accounts now so stay in touch and keep the stories, photos and movies coming in...

Computer Training During July 2010

Computer training during July was undertaken during the evening.  Check out the photos to see how many families attended.  Congratulations to everyone, we enjoyed having you at the CTC.  It is always refreshing to have spouses attend computer training together, you benefit twice as much.  Thanks for making the evening programme enjoyable and caring enough about each other to make sure that no one was left behind.  The little things go a long way, Kia Ora.

Computer Training During June 2010

What an experience!  Over 75% of the group had no computer experience and also had never touched a computer.  A new experience is one that you will never forget...

Has everyone checked out the Scooters, three families attended computer training in their Scooters.  To have our Senior Citizens travelling a total distance of approximately 2kms each way by Scooter is to be commended.  When the rain fell, Kelly and I drove them into the CTC and parked them up, what fun we had.

Computer Training During May 2010

Thanks everyone for making our 2nd Pakeke programme memorable.  Your thirst for technology knowledge is admirable.  Over half of the families attending computer training were only recently registered on a six month Computer Programme with the Salvation Army, Ka Pai.  The feedback we received from families has been fantastic, Computers in Homes has provided a platform for our families creating a wealth of energy that is inspiring and empowering for everyone to have an "I Can" attitude.  Keep believing in yourselves because the world is now at the tips of your fingers.

Computers in Homes Making a Difference in Wairoa

What defines happiness?  Could it be having alot of money, a good job, a caring family?  A number of things define happiness...  I have come up with a new definition of happiness, I can't describe it... so i'm going to show you ....

Congratulations to the first Senior/Pakeke Graduates for 2010.  Congratulations to everyone who stepped out of their comfort zones and decided to take a new step towards learning about Computers.  Ka Pai!  To our Nanny Ira Pomana of Nuhaka, our eldest Pakeke, we can only inspire to be as fit in body and in mind and also to be driving ourselves back and forth from class at the age of 84 years.

Our first class and all the families were from Nuhaka and Mahia, with the exception of Sol Edwards from Wairoa.  Alot of laughs and giggles and alot of friendships made.

A big thanks to all the families who participated especially to those who gave computer support to others with less computer knowledge. Computer training took place over a 7 week period, thanks to Simon and the BOT for keeping our family PCs safe and secure during the training period.

To Hana, Charmaigne and Len, we hope that your computer training has been put to good use. We look forward to hearing all the good stories from yourselves and the rest of the families during post computer training.

Congratulations to the families of Frasertown School who graduated on the 11th of July 2008.

Thanks to Mrs Jenny Ratcliffe for supporting Computers in Homes Wairoa project and making yourself available to attend, mix and mingle with the parents and children during computer training.

Thanks to the families for top mark attendance... Your attendance reflected in your computer learning... There was so much to absorb and everyone coped really well.

The kids... I love it when the families bring their children along... I encourage the kids to learn and to teach their parents. Georgina Tipuna, aka "The Librarian", you did a great job showing Dad how to use the computer, i'm sure he was very impressed with your skills. Danielle Roberts, I was very impressed with your learning, attitude and behaviour, a big thank you to your Mum Maria for putting her hand up as the Project Buddy/Mentor to assist all the families.

To the rest of the families, it was great to meet you all and I hope to hear the good learning stories during post training.
