Computers in Homes Wairoa

Welcome to the Computers in Homes (CIH) Wairoa Website.

Computers In Homes - Rorohiko I roto nga Kainga is a programme that brings computer technology within reach of all New Zealand families with school-aged children.

The programme has provided families in low-income Communities with computers and the internet, but more importantly, training, skills and support through their local school.

With the skills and confidence to use technology, parents are able to connect with their children's learning. As a result, Computers in Homes helps to strengthen relationships between families and schools, improve educational outcomes for children, and provide greater opportunities for their parents.

Computers in Homes has already helped to connect more than 4,000 families, with around 100,000 more waiting.

Wairoa District School Families: 2009

Computers in Homes has supported 250 families by providing them with a computer in the home and technology support. We are proud to be apart of your future.


Senior (Pakeke) 55+ Programme: 2010
In March 2010, Computers in Homes Wairoa launched their Senior (Pakeke) Computer programme. Again, Wairoa is fortunate to provide 130 Senior Citizens the opportunity to undertake computer training and upon completion will receive a computer and accessories together with six months free internet connection.

As evidenced from the previous project around the Wairoa District Schools, it was found that many grandparents were primary caregivers to their grandchildren together with a high number of being secondary caregivers as well. Based on these facts, there is a drive to close the technology gap for our Senior Members of Wairoa. We are dedicated to providing a quality service in a safe and comfortable Community Training Centre where families will learn how to operate a computer and have fun learning. There are opportunities for our elderly to close the divide with families living overseas by teaching them how to use their computers to connect with their families living Nationally or internationally. Computer Training with combined Wairoa District Schools


2009 - Thanks to Tiaho School Board of Trustees for providing a central base for Computers in Homes to undertake their computer training for Wairoa District School families.  This dedicated computer training room enabled the project to collectively provide computer training to various School families who missed out or could not attend computer training at their local School.  Congratulations to all the families who participated.

Strengthening families with technology is about connecting people of all ages.  An emphasis for parents and caregivers to bring the children or grandchildren to computer training is encouraged.  Children understand computers alot better than adults give them credit for.  Children learn from various computer programmes on a daily basis at School.  They are interactive with Microsoft Office programmes, internet surfing, social networking and emailing.  Music and video are other programmes that children have proven to be skilled at.

Congratulations to the families of Kotemaori School who graduated on the 18th of May 2008.

Kotemaori School is approximately 55 kms South of Wairoa with a roll of less than 30 children.

A big thanks to all the families who participated especially to those who gave computer support to others with less computer knowledge. Computer training took place over a 7 week period, thanks to Simon and the BOT for keeping our family PCs safe and secure during the training period.

To Hana, Charmaigne and Len, we hope that your computer training has been put to good use. We look forward to hearing all the good stories from yourselves and the rest of the families during post computer training.

Congratulations to the families of Frasertown School who graduated on the 11th of July 2008.

Thanks to Mrs Jenny Ratcliffe for supporting Computers in Homes Wairoa project and making yourself available to attend, mix and mingle with the parents and children during computer training.

Thanks to the families for top mark attendance... Your attendance reflected in your computer learning... There was so much to absorb and everyone coped really well.

The kids... I love it when the families bring their children along... I encourage the kids to learn and to teach their parents. Georgina Tipuna, aka "The Librarian", you did a great job showing Dad how to use the computer, i'm sure he was very impressed with your skills. Danielle Roberts, I was very impressed with your learning, attitude and behaviour, a big thank you to your Mum Maria for putting her hand up as the Project Buddy/Mentor to assist all the families.

To the rest of the families, it was great to meet you all and I hope to hear the good learning stories during post training.
